Figure It Out

As owner of Building Detail, I manage every facet of a design and construction business, from early design conception to assembling the appropriate construction trades to swinging a hammer and making it a reality.

WORKING

Working at other large and small architecture firms, I gained abundant experience as a professional designer. This experience translates into my belief that design is an intimate process of research and collaboration with you, the client, and other professionals in order to achieve the best use of materials to make your space feel comfortable to you. Architecture serves as an agreement to protect your interests while working through the construction process. It’s these beliefs and abilities that have allowed me to take part in many projects that have earned numerous awards, from local beautification awards to the Bruner Award for urban excellence.

TEACHING

I used this experience and approach while teaching for 3 years at the University of Detroit Mercy’s School of Architecture (UDM). While teaching at UDM, I joined the Detroit Collaborative Design Center and was instrumental in engaging a group of students to construct the Harry Tompson Center. This homeless outreach Rebuild Center in New Orleans was constructed, in part, as a result of Hurricane Katrina. I continue to work closely with The Harry Thompson Center as an advisor and visit New Orleans semi-annually to assess and address the facility’s evolving needs.

VOLUNTEERING

Volunteering for local commissions and boards has also been important.  As a member of the Royal Oak Zoning Board of Appeals for 6 years and serving as its vice chairman, I developed relationships and learned to work closely with the city. As Chairman of the Royal Oak Main Street Design Committee, I orchestrated a group of professionals to develop guidelines for a Façade Improvement Program that the Downtown Development Authority implemented in 2004. I’ve also served on the Historic District Commission and have been an active member and donor of the Architectural Salvage Warehouse of Detroit.
